04 JUNE 2019

We are pleased to announce the upcoming conference entitled “Cultural Dynamics and Landscape Transformation in a Rapidly Changing Continent : from the Big Dry to the Holocene in Eastern Africa” which will take place at the University of Toulouse Jean-Jaurès in France from the 25th to the 28th of September 2019. This meeting is also an opportunity to pay tribute to Professor Xavier Gutherz, who has made a major contribution to African prehistory through his work.
This conference will officially be a « Séance ouverte de la Société Préhistorique française ».
The first two days of the conference will focus on archaeological work currently carried out in the Nile Valley and the East African Rift. The second part of the conference will be focused on the presentation of syntheses that touch upon the conference theme at the scale of the African continent, and for which some of the most prominent scholars in their respective fields will participate. Among the other highlights of the conference, on Thursday evening 26 September, Professor Xavier Gutherz will give a lecture on the rock art of the Horn of Africa at the Natural History Museum in Toulouse. On Saturday, September 28, an excursion is scheduled to the cave of Mas d’Azil, a remarkable prehistoric site of Ariège. The visit will be followed by festivities as part of the Festi’Dolmen organized by the association « Grottes et Archéologies ».
